Speedmaster Moonphase Calendar

While A. Lange & Söhne says that "the two models symbolize the significance of spending time together," and that they are, "like two harmonizing voices in a duet," I wish the splendid opportunity of the A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1's 20th anniversary was used to transmit a less cheesy and generic message, but rather something more closely related to the importance of this model in the company's history. The two pieces could have connected the past and the future of the brand, or offered some other comprehension of the model's role and the different versions we have seen over the years.

Is a dive watch inspired by water? Yes and no. The Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 Water concept is just that and take inspiration from flowing liquid and sea creatures. Niklas imagines this Sea-Dweller design as "Damascus steel with the illusion of a flowing almost liquid metal surface. It has a dial with a close-up shark skin pattern. The ultimate dive watch should look shark sharp! This is a sea creature watch to maybe love or fear. Or both!" It is an interesting and polarizing concept that once again borrows from natural textures and aesthetics.

Setting the time is easy. The desired home city needs to be positioned at 6 o’clock, and this can be done by using the pusher at 8 o’clock. Afterwards, the wearer only needs to adjust the local hours and minutes using the crown. The hour and minutes, which are always linked with the day and night indicator and 24 time zones, will now show the correct local time and time of all 24 timezones. And when traveling to a new timezone, the wearer only needs to use the pusher to ensure that the new city that he or she is in is once again positioned at the 6 o’clock position. Everything else will automatically adjust itself and remain synchronized.

The case uses some special screws and has articulating lugs, which help the sheer mass of the case fit securely on a range of wrist sizes. It is quite rare for a watch design to be so focused on being large, but also wearable. With a properly-sized strap, the Porsche Design P'6780 Diver wears extremely comfortably. Changes to the case from the Eterna to the Porsche Design are evident, but minor. Most of the changes to the watch from the prior Eterna version are on the dial - though it is not just a matter of a re-badged watch - the Porsche Design piece is very much a Porsche Design watch that simply borrows from an incredible design that didn't work for Eterna.

One of the most impressive pieces that we have seen at SIHH 2015 is Girard-Perregaux’s Tri-Axial Tourbillon. This is not a brand new watch, however. It was actually launched last year, but Girard-Perregaux has updated that model and is now available in white gold and has a newly designed dial. The end result is a very technical looking watch - it looks as if it was designed to be worn by men in white lab coats. Even though it is not new, the tri-axial tourbillon, which rotates at three different speeds, is still a grand feat in watchmaking.

No one's death is something to be taken lightly but when someone like Robin Williams dies it causes society as a whole to pause. I was personally shocked, saddened, and depressed to hear that Robin Williams took his own life yesterday, August 11, 2014. The 63 year old actor and comedian surprised the world with news of his most unfortunate passing. I think I speak for most people who can say that Robin Williams is someone that influenced their lives in more than one way.

Ralph Lauren calls this release the Ralph Lauren Automotive Chronograph, despite the fact that it shares most major design elements with the brand's Safari Chronograph and Black Chronograph models. The point to be made here is that the name is a bit misleading – there arguably isn't as much "automotive-ness" to it as other car design inspired watches bring to the table – but that is not necessarily a bad thing. The wood trim, to me at least, could work just as well for a safari, a yachting, or even an aviation themed watch – here, however, the brand went with the automotive approach.

Necessary Data
>Brand: Giuliano Mazzuoli
>Model: Carrara & Carrara Chronograph
>Price: ,900 and ,900 USD
>Size: 44.5mm
>Would reviewer personally wear it: Yes
>Friend we'd recommend it to first: Design (and sculpture) lovers partial to items from Italy looking for a unique timepiece.
>Best characteristic of watch: Design of marble case is refined, comfortable, nice to touch, and visually attractive. Good looking dial.
>Worst characteristic of watch: Crown o-ring might be too fragile. Does not like being dropped (even once). Chronograph version perhaps not enough extra value for the extra price.

Montblanc is now one of the most exciting brands under Richemont’s wide umbrella – thanks in no small part to Jerome Lambert’s leadership, the man who played a key role in making Jaeger-LeCoultre the powerhouse that it is today. And with SIHH 2015 just weeks away, the company has just released details of its latest watch, the Montblanc Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum.

Having said that, the future of the connected wrist watch is about so much more than reading the time. Apple and its competitors are clearly dedicating huge amounts of resources into trying to discover what other features will best resonate with consumers. Still, the Apple Watch is very much about simply being able to glance at it and read the time – in a way that is both convenient and useful - just like a "real watch." In that regard, the Apple Watch doesn't try to reinvent the concept of a "wrist wearable" but begins with the concept of a traditional watch and develops it from there by adding functionality and connectivity. At its heart, I truly feel that the Apple Watch began life as just that... a watch. I don't necessarily feel that way for many of the currently available competitive products.

Then there is the matter of the optional watch dial portion of the Leatherman Tread - the element which makes the Tread interesting for aBlogtoWatch. While Leatherman has not yet released detailed facts such as the watch case size, we know that the Leatherman Tread Watch will contain a Swiss quartz movement and have a sapphire crystal over the dial. The case is also water resistant to 200 meters. Around the dial is a rotating bezel.

I also want to take issue with the “grande complication” part of the new highly limited edition watch’s name. I typically associate grand complication timepieces as those which have a bevy of complications in one timepiece such as a minute repeater, chronograph, and perpetual calendar. The Harmony Ultra-Thin Grande Complication Chronograph features the time, power reserve indicator, automatic winding, and a split second (rattrapante) chronograph. The assortment of these features is both impressive and satisfying, but hardly “grand” when compared to the amount of features other brands as well as Vacheron Constantin has been able to engineer into a single movement. OK, so some naming issues aside, let me go on to explain how this is one of the most impressive new watches presented at SIHH (and certainly priced accordingly).

Ultimately, if you are sitting on the fence and having trouble deciding between the Rolex GMT-Master II Ref. 116710BLNR and Ref. 116710LN, I’m going to give you a very cliche but effective advice: go and try both of them on. I keep going back to this, but it is a very important aspect of the Ref. 116710BLNR, and the way the bezel plays with light needs to be experienced first-hand. Finally, to sum both watches up in a sentence, I would say that the Ref. 116710LN is classic and practical, and the Ref. 116710BLNR is a little bit more fun and special. The Rolex GMT-Master II 116710BLNR has a list price of $8950. rolex.com

Kelly Rowland: Absolutely. Women want choices. We don't always want something so over the top all the time. And we want to make it our own. I actually feel it's a unisex watch. I wanted it to appeal to both males and females – just because I did it doesn’t make it just a female watch! [LAUGHS] But it is a very tricky balance to make something that looks great on both men’s and women’s wrists.

Bill Geiser isn't just a data guy, but he is a watch guy. One thing that he unequivocally understands is that for smartwatches to hit the mainstream, they need to be more useful, more simple to use, and more attractive. A recently published patent application by META watch sheds light on what they have planned as well as what might be a seriously valuable technology if they are granted the patent after the examination process. The claim is rather long and confusing, but I will go ahead and explain what I feel are the relevant parts. By the way, the patent at issue is application number 20140293755, which can be read at the USPTO website, here.

The aim of this project is to create an airplane that is powered only by solar energy and is capable of flying around the globe, as Omega puts it: "making a bold statement about viable alternatives to non-renewable energy." In March 2015, the around-the-world Solar Impulse flight will take off from Abu Dhabi and over five months the pilots will stop in Asia, North America and Southern Europe, flying day and night, to complete the first solar-powered circumnavigation of the world. In fact, this 2015 X-33 is not the only watch Omega has created with ties to this project: in 2009 they presented the Omega Speedmaster HB-SIA limited edition watch with a more unusual carbon fiber dial (article here).

Last, there is expected to be a higher-end segment with the "Salon de TE," where products of brands aiming for the luxury market will be exhibited. How this translates into actual quality and value to the finer consumer is something that we can tell only once we have seen this selection of "over 150 top-end international brands and designer collections." There certainly is a lot to look forward to so stay tuned for our comprehensive coverage of the Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair in which we will try and find the answers to all those aforementioned issues, while also providing insight into this massive fair. hktdc.com

On the wrist, the Urwerk UR-210S is "only" about 44m wide, but the case is on the longer side, being almost 54mm long. There is one new element on the Urwerk UR-210S watch that wasn't on previous versions of the UR-210 - which is a sort of crown protector that adds a curved bar element over the crown which is located at the top of the watch. You can see the watch on the wrist of aBlogtoWatch Managing Editor David who was taking the pictures of it while I did the video. We both felt that while, on paper, the UR-210S has strange dimensions, it does wear comfortably. Nevertheless, this isn't going to be the type of watch that looks "normal," which is the last thing you want when buying a timepiece of this ilk.

What made the Academy Christophe Colomb so unique upon its debut back in 2010 was, of course, its "self regulating gyroscopic module" – which was a first in wristwatches. What Zenith did there was create a gimbal-like system that would hold the entire escapement in a horizontal position at all times, regardless the position of the watch itself. This allowed for superior timekeeping performance as the balance wheel and the hairspring were constantly in a horizontal position – allowing for near-perfect regulation. This unique design necessitated a rather extraordinary looking sapphire bulb that extended from the pane of the caseback and the front.
